Usually, the program begins June 1st and is for a minimum of 10 weeks; however, the start date and duration of a law clerk’s summer will be determined by the law clerk and his/her direct supervisor. The Summer Program is designed to provide current law students with a challenging unpaid clerkship that reflects the demands and rewards of public service, as well as a realistic picture of what it is like to practice law for the City of Chicago. Participants in the Summer Program are not compensated. Work with Natalie Taylor of our Field Placement Program (3rd floor Student Services Suite) to see if you can arrange to work for the City Department of Law as an extern and receive academic credit.
During the Summer Program, the law clerks will be assigned to work in one of the practice divisions in the law department and participate in a wide variety of activities including:

• assisting in trial preparation;
• attending depositions;
• observing real estate closings;
• attending client meetings and court proceedings;
• researching legal issues; and
• drafting memoranda, briefs and contracts.
Also, law clerks that have finished their second year of law school and qualify for an Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711 license may represent the City in:
• mandatory tort arbitrations in the Circuit Court of Cook County;
• disciplinary hearings for the police and labor boards; and
• labor arbitration.
They may also depose or examine witnesses in trials in state and federal court.
During the summer, the Law Department will host a lecture series that feature speakers addressing legal issues that affect the City in areas such as environmental and First Amendment law and provides the law clerks with opportunities to meet with City Law Department officials and members of state and federal judiciary.
The Law Department seeks talented, promising individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many City Law Department attorneys are active in civic and professional activities and organizations. The Law Department is committed to increasing opportunities for minorities in the legal profession, and it is proud that its staff reflects the racial, cultural and ethnic diversity of Chicago. For programs like the Presidential Management Fellows, it is a bit trickier because you don't have a specific employer you are targeting yet. But it is also easier because they've identified the criteria on which they are basing their evaluations:

• Problem Solving
• Interpersonal Skills
• Oral Communication
• Written Communication
• Public Service Motivation
• Personal Accountability
• Adaptability

So the key to showing these through the experiences you've had that demonstrate those qualities. You may not weave an example of each of these into every job on your resume or every short answer in the online assessment, but you'll want to demonstrate each of these criteria throughout the process. Put your thinking caps on, and think about experiences that demonstrate a few of these qualities at the same time. This will serve you well as more employers adopt utilizing behaviorial style interview questions. If you have questions about the PMF application process, which will be open from November 5-19, 2012. To be eligible, applicants must be current students graduating before August 31, 2012 and graduates since November 5, 2010, from an advanced degree (yes, your JD counts) program.

DePaul Law Career Serviceshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10358756948516350141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9146169877407379594.post-2484805276634468312012-10-25T18:26:00.001-05:002012-10-25T18:26:48.033-05:00Next Week Community Events

For more details on these, and other programs, please check out the Symplicity, College of Law, Chicago Bar Association, Illinois Pro Bono, and other calendars (such as the All Bar Calendar) for more education and networking opportunities:

Tuesday, October 30

Shadow a Judge, Institute for Advocacy & Dispute Resolution, Skokie Courthouse

Thursday, November 1

BLSA Alumni Networking Reception, 5:30 PM, Nacional 27

Fall Pig Roast & Hayrides, 5:30, DuPage County Bar Association

Saturday, November 3

Help Clean-Up the Community with Legal Prep Charter Academies, Chicago Bar Association

DePaul Law Career Serviceshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10358756948516350141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9146169877407379594.post-82775287558296211222012-10-25T16:16:00.001-05:002012-10-25T16:16:00.665-05:00CBA Committee Meetings for the Week of October 29, 2012

October 29
Unauthorized Practice & Multidisciplinary Practice Committee
Meeting cancelled.

November 1
Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee
Meeting rescheduled to November 8.
Consumer Law Committee (IL MCLE Credit)
Salvador Lopez, Robson Lopez, consumer rights of veterans and service members.
Real Estate Taxation Committee (IL MCLE Credit, Webcast)
Panel of speakers on changes to property and sales tax exemptions for Illinois hospitals.
Workers' Compensation Committee (12:30 P.M.) Do you have an in-depth knowledge of the law you practice? Have you had many trials to hone your skills? Did you graduate with honors? What about your clients? Are they satisfied enough to recommend you?
None of that really matters. In order to be an expert you need media exposure and a lot of it. You have probably had this happen to you or you will. You're watching the evening news and some lawyer is introduced along with his credentials to establish credibility. After you get over your disbelief, you realize you could run rings around him in negotiations or trial.
So, why is he on the news or in the newspaper and you're not? Exposure and promotion. Sure, it costs 50 cents at Rotary if your name is in the paper...but it's worth it!
The advantage of exposure is familiarity and credibility. How do you get exposed? You schmooze reporters and return phone calls. If a reporter is on deadline (and they usually are) they are not going to wait around for you to call them back. They will go to the next name on the list.
Another way to get exposure and introductions is to hire a public relations firm but that is usually reserved for high-profile cases. Again, you can spend years establishing yourself as the go-to guy on an issue, or you can bypass those years and hire someone to do it for you.
What are the advantaged of being an expert and getting exposure. New business and prestige. Whether we want to admit it in polite company, money and recognition are the goals. Sure, we believe in the Rule of Law and respect it, but doesn't it make you feel great to be recognized as an expert. After all, we are only human and respect is a fundamental need.
Most importantly, becoming an expert means we can impart information to others. Law is law, but technique is everything. People look to you for guidance and advice. They learn from you. That is the quintessential quality of expertise.
One warning: It takes all of the above to become recognized as an expert. It also takes time. Not decades but years, so plan ahead. Do not expect to become a success overnight or hire a PR firm and become an instant star...although it doesn't hurt! That is, unless you have a few decades to spend working on it.

Article by Jim Grandone

Reprinted from themadisonrecord.com 10/7/12

DePaul Law Career Serviceshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10358756948516350141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9146169877407379594.post-59725738328494981732012-10-23T10:45:00.001-05:002012-10-23T10:45:05.520-05:00CBA CLE Events

Take advantage of CLEAdvantage, the CBA Member Discount CLE Plan.
