Etiquette Tip of the Week: When you forget what's-his-name...

Have you ever had to introduce two people and you forgot the name of one of them? "I'd really like you to meet, uh...and you are?..."

Silly tricks like, "Pronounce your last name for me," just don't work. The person might respond, "It's Smmiiiiitttthhh."

When you forget someone's name, don't finesse, just confess. Do not say, "I'm sorry, I FORGOT your name." It is much nicer to say, "Please tell me your name again." If you can reference anything you remember about the person that will help soften the blow of being forgotten, use it. "I remember we met at that Super Bowl party...please tell me your name again."

Shadow a Judge Opportunity

The Institute for Advocacy & Dispute Resolution is hosting one day "Shadow a Judge" programs at the Criminal Division, Juvenile Justice Division, the Second Municipal District (Skokie), and the Fifth Municipal District (Bridgeview) of the Circuit Court of Cook County this spring.

The Criminal Division event will take place on Tuesday, March 13, 2012.

The Juvenile Justice Division event will take place on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.

The Second Municipal event (Skokie) will take place on Thursday, March 15, 2012.

The Fifth Municipal event (Bridgeview) will take place Friday, April 13, 2012.Generally, students are asked to arrive at the courthouses between 8:30-8:45 a.m. Students should be able to stay until about 3:30 or 4 p.m. In the morning, they will shadow the judges. During a catered in lunch, the students will be able to talk to the judges on a more informal basis. Then in the afternoon, they will continue to shadow.

Transportation will be provided from DePaul and back for those students who want it.

Students interested in registering can contact Natalie Taylor at ntaylor4@depaul.edu or (312) 362-8312. To become registered, students should provide their class level, part-time or full-time status, student identification number, and interest in transportation. If students are interested in a municipal division, they should also let Natalie know if they prefer civil or criminal law. If students are interested in the Juvenile Justice Division and would like to tour the Child Detention Center, they should also send Natalie their date of birth.

Students should not register unless they can commit to attending the event. Slots are available on a first come, first serve basis.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness: 3 Forms You Need to Know

Our friend Heather Jarvis has shared good news with us regarding documetnation for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program -- there are forms!

The Department of Education today released the long awaited Employment Certification for Public Service Loan Forgiveness form! Woot!

Folks in government and 501(c)(3) nonprofit service* can finally get that warm and fuzzy feeling that will come from the government saying “yes” your employment qualifies and “yes” you made x number of payments that count towards forgiveness.

Why This Is Important
Student loan borrowers can earn Public Service Loan Forgiveness by making 120 of the right kind of payments, on the right kind of loans, while working in the right kind of job*. But you also have to PROVE that you met all the requirements of the program. That’s where the paperwork comes in.

City of Chicago Department of Law: 2012 Summer Law Clerk Program

The City of Chicago Department of Law is pleased to offer its 2012 Law Clerk Program, a summer opportunity for qualified law students. The position begins June 1st, continues for a minimum of 10 weeks, and is unpaid. Deadline to apply is March 2, 2012.

Participants will have the opportunity to assist in trial preparation, attend depositions, observe real estate closings, and more. Law clerks having completed their second year of law school and qualified for an Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711 license may have additional opportunities. These include representing the City in mandatory tort arbitrations in the Circuit Court of Cook County, labor arbitration, and disciplinary hearings for the police and labor boards.

Leadership Council on Legal Diversity 1L Mentoring Program

The Leadership Council on Legal Diversity is pleased to announce that it has launched the Mentoring Program to assist in the development of diverse 1L students at certain law schools located throughout the country. The goal of the Mentoring Program is to ensure that diverse 1L students receive the mentoring and preparation they need to maximize their potential in law school and throughout their legal career. LCLD has developed curricula to assist its mentors in providing concrete, consistent information to law students about study habits, exam success, class participation, advocacy skills, legal analysis, and other relevant topics. Diverse 1L students who register with LCLD for this program will receive ongoing guidance from experienced lawyers who are succeeding in some of the country’s finest companies and law firms. LCLD anticipates continuing this program every year for the foreseeable future.

LCLD member companies and law firms have identified volunteer lawyers from their organizations to be paired with diverse 1L students from Loyola University, DePaul University, University of Chicago and Northwestern. Reminder: Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference: February 4th

The Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference will be held at Northwestern Law School on Saturday, February 4^th in Chicago. The conference is a great way for students to find a public interest job and to learn more about public interest employers. Students may still participate whether or not they previously registered for the Conference.
If you have received an interview, you must register in person for the conference between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. on February 4^th or your interview(s) will be cancelled. This requirement is outlined in detail on the MPILCC website here: http://mpilcc.uchicago.edu/conference.html#Procedures.If you did not receive any interviews, there is still a way to get an interview. Any student may register at the conference starting at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event, where he/she will receive an open interview sign-up number. Any student with an interview who does not register between 7:30 and 8:30 on February 4^th will forfeit his or her interviews, and those interviews will be available for open sign-up. Students will be allowed the opportunity to sign-up for an open interview in number order, so the earlier they arrive on February 4^th, the better chance they will have of getting an available interview. They may arrive before 7:30 a.m. and get in a line for registration.

Any Student may attend the Table Talk at MPILCC and speak to participating employers.
All Students are invited to attend the lunchtime workshop, “Public Service Loan Forgiveness in Five Easy Steps,” from 12:00pm-1:30pm.

Etiquette Tip of the Week: Let Them Eat...Lunch

If someone is eating lunch at his or her desk, do not loom and ask, "What's for lunch?" Do not interrupt the person and try to do business. Give them some space. Respect the lunch. It's a lot like when people are on the phone - do not hover in the door of their office or cubicle / veal fattening pen. Unless the building is on fire, do not interrupt them.

If you are the one eating lunch, be honest about your lunch time. If you have an hour, that doesn't mean go out and shop for an hour, then bring lunch back to your desk and begin to eat it after your lunch hour is over.

Mock Interview Program Coming This Spring!

Practice makes perfect. We’ve all heard it and rolled our eyes, but the reason so many people say it is it happens to be true. Practice can even make you feel better about job interviews, believe it or not, and that’s why Law Career Services has a Mock Interview Program.During the week of March 5-9, 2012, you will have the opportunity to practice your interviewing skills in a way that’s better than talking to your bathroom mirror. Area attorneys, many of them alumni, will be conducting mock interviews that will help you become more comfortable with the interview process without the anxiety of having a potential job on the line. The interviewer will also give you constructive feedback that can be helpful in the future.

Registration will take place through Symplicity during February. More information, including the interview schedule and interviewer bios, will be posted in the Document Library as it becomes available, so stay tuned! Women Lawyers (Legal) Support Group
The Lawyers’ Assistance Program started a Support Group for women attorneys and legal professionals. YLS e-Mentoring Program
The YLS is teaming up with Chicago Public Schools’ Richards Career Academy to host its annual e-mentoring program. The program serves approximately 40 high school students enrolled in Law & Public Safety. Over a 14-week period, lawyer volunteers commit to participating in a February 8 kick-off lunch at the CBA, a weekly email exchange, a mid-term visit to Richards Career Academy, and a May 15 closing lunch at the CBA. Topics of the e-mail exchanges include substantive legal topics in their curriculum, college/law school prep, job interviewing, and the practice of law.
