The U. S. Senate Sergeant at Arms is sponsoring a 6 or 8-week unpaid legal internship for credit starting the first week in June, 2012. This is a good opportunity for students interested in administrative drafting and/or seeking exposure to the administrative, organizational, security, and historical background of the U.S. Senate.

- Federal Tort Claims Act (28 USCS 2671 et seq.) - Typically involving allegations of negligent operation of motor vehicles
- Claims against the U.S. Government by federal employees for damage/loss of personal property incident to Government service (31 USCS 3721)
- Privacy policy for the Senate Sergeant at Arms Office of Information Technology
- Revisions to the U. S. Capitol Police Board Manual of Policy and Procedures and supporting documents
- Review/drafting Memorandums of Understanding/Agreement documenting agreements among Government agencies
The intern will also receive exposure to practical application and acquire a better understanding of such issues as:
o Separation of powers
o 1st Amendment freedom to assemble and petition the Government for redress of grievances
o 4th Amendment protection against unreasonable searches versus limited, administrative, special needs searches
o Title 2 of the U. S. Code
o Security initiatives relating to continuation of government and operations
o Standing Rules of the Senate
Eligibility: Candidates must have completed 29 credits by May, 2012 and possess a strong interest in pursuing a Federal Government career.
