FREE Landlord-Tenant Law Seminar

Sterling Education Services, Inc. is a non-profit continuing education company that conducts seminars across the nation. We are holding a Landlord-Tenant Law seminar in Springfield, IL on April 14, 2011 and we would like to offer five law students free scholarship-passes to this seminar. The students get a day-long overview of a particular aspect of the law, a seminar manual, and they also get an opportunity to network with practicing attorneys. This is a win-win situation.

To take advantage of this opportunity, students must register before the seminar via phone or email. No walk-ins will be allowed. Only current law students may take advantage of these passes and MUST provide their student id number or other proof of enrollment in order to register. MPILCC is coming!

The Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference is coming on Saturday, February 5th! Even if you did not pre-register, you can attend and bid for interviews on-site.  Student registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and all students with interviews must check-in before 8:30 a.m. or their interviews will be forfeited.  For those early birds (whether registering on-site or checking in from preregistration), you will receive a lottery number which will enable you to bid for open interview slots.

Equal Justice Works Conference & Career Fair

Upcoming Deadline: Last day to register/cancel attendance is October 12
Notifications for interview selections have been emailed to all applicants. Students may continue to register to attend through October 12 (note that registering for the conference is separate from bidding for or accepting interviews -- please see the Registration Guide for more information.) Students who wish to register/attend following this deadline must register onsite for $20. Payment will be accepted by check or credit card only and DePaul will NOT reimburse you if you fail to register before October 12, 2010 through the system by that date. Please note that Law Career Services is charged for your registration regardless of your attendance so please cancel your registration before October 12 if you are no longer attending.

This event is expected to fill up so come early!

Networking Reception

Employment Law Seminar

*Important Note: The scholarship policy requires that recipients provide credit card information at the time of registration to secure their free pass. No charge will be made to the card unless the registrant fails to attend the program and does not notify us three business days in advance. If a scholarship registrant should fail to show up at the program or cancel as described above a $50.00 no-show fee will be charged to the card provided. This policy has been instituted to avoid students securing a free pass and not choosing to use it while other students who would have like to have attended were told the free slots had been filled. Students will be thoroughly reminded of this policy upon registration for the program.

2nd Annual Pro Bono Conference

Looking to secure a placement at a public interest law organization or in the government sector? This program is for Chicago-area law students and recent graduates who are interested in learning more about placements as volunteers, interns or externs, fellows or staff at public interest law organizations. The program will begin with a panel discussion focusing on how to obtain pro bono and public interest law placements, particularly PILI Internships and Fellowships, Equal Justice Works Fellowships and Skadden Fellowships. It will also address incorporating pro bono and public interest law into your experience in law school and throughout your career.

Equal Justice Works Conference & Career Fair

The annual Equal Justice Works Conference & Career Fair will be held in Bethesda, MD October 22nd & 23rd. Student registration opened on August 30th and bidding for employer interviews closes on September 24th. More than 130 employers are participating in interviews and networking sessions plus there will practitioner roundtables and several conference sessions throughout both days. You must bid for interviews and register for the conference separately so please read through the Student Registration Guide carefully. DePaul will not reimburse participants that register/pay on-site.

Equal Justice Works Conference & Career Fair

The Equal Justice Works Conference & Career Fair will be held on October 22nd & 23rd in Bethesda, Maryland. Registration opens today, August 30th, for students wanting to attend. Registration and bidding is open through September 24th. Colorado Public Defender

Colorado Public Defender-- updates to the Summer Intern Program in the Honors & Internship Handbook (see Symplicity for login/password information). This office will also be interviewing 3Ls at the Equal Justice Works (EJW) Conference & Career Fair in October. Registration for EJW begins August 30, 2010.

Tweetups

Last week at the NALP Annual Conference, we attended our first tweetup - an in-person gathering of folks that communicate via twitter, share similar interests, or are tweeting their way through a common activity (like a lecture, concert, or conference). Many decry twitter as senseless microblogging babble about the minutiae of the day but in reality, we've connected to new colleagues, renewed relationships with others, and been able to stay abreast of breaking news through the tweets we follow and the groups with whom we interact. PICs Picks: Career Fairs & Receptions

As law students begin to determine their interests in law school, participating in conferences, career fairs and receptions are an important way to learn about practice areas and expand their networking efforts. These opportunities provide a wealth of information and guidance because these events are designed so that agencies and organizations can gather to share information about their work and the types of people they hire as interns, attorneys, and program directors. These events provide an opportunity to network with many practitioners and learn about how different groups' approach their work and their missions. The opportunity to create a personal connection with an attorney can pay dividends in not only developing relationships but also create relationships that will last throughout your career. Students should make an effort to attend these events; a small investment of time can pay a large professional dividend. Check the law school and bar association calendars to ensure that you are making the most of these opportunities. For example, this Thursday's Meet the Public Service Employer's Reception at Loyola will feature 51 public interest and non-profit agencies.

PSLawNet is a subscription service for which Law Career Services provides students and alumni access for their public service job search. This rich resource, in addition to its national and international job postings, also has an additional career resource library covering a large range of topics, including government search resources, careers in criminal law, summer or career funding, and much, much more.
