Networking Myths Debunked: Receptions

We've been hearing a lot of networking myths lately so let's spend some time debunking those.  Today, we'll start with I can't stay for the entire event, so I won't go.
If an event is labeled as a reception or an open house, then it is expected that folks will come and go as needed. This is true of the receptions we hold at College of Law, at the bar associations, and in most (American) business sectors.  This is also generally true of bar association or other general meetings where you are not playing an active role, such as the typical Chicago Bar Association Committee meeting.  You'll see lawyers come in late, leave early, and step out to take calls. As long as you do so quietly and unobtrusively, it is understood that you may need to get back to class or only have an hour for lunch.
