Next Week in LCS - July 15, 2011

In case you are unable to read HTML in your email, or just love our blog, here's the latest edition of our newsletter:
Are you interested in pursuing postgraduate judicial clerkships? Make sure you watch all the panel videos in the iTunesU (CampusConnect login required) library - faculty, past/present clerks, Nuts & Bolts.  The comprehensive Judicial Clerkship Guide in the Symplicity Document Library has all the upcoming deadlines if you have applications due this fall  PLEASE NOTEThe deadline to submit your hardcopy (paper) application recommender requests to Faculty Services is July 22, 2011.  If you have questions, ASK -- we're here all summer!

Resume Collects: if you are interested in participating in the Resume Collects for employers who are interested in DePaul students but not coming on campus through the FERP process, please don't forget that those have moved to the Symplicity Job Postings.  Please see the FERP FAQ's in the Symplicity Announcements.  Some employers have July deadlines so don't miss out on these opportunities!  To participate, all you need is an approved resume.

3Ls/4Ls: Did you know that most federal agencies do not hire new law graduates directly, but through their Honors Programs? While the Department of Justice has the largest progam (nearly 200 new graduates are hired annually), many federal agencies create specialized programs for the cadre of new graduate attorneys, and these deadlines begin as early as September. To learn more, check out the Honors & Internship Handbook (password links are in the Symplicity Announcements) and Government Job Search Guide (in the Symplicity Document Library) so you can begin to plan for these application deadlines. The US Department of Justice has announced that their applications will be open July 25-September 6, 2011. You are encouraged to an appointment with Associate Director Alisa Rosales to develop your game plan.

2Ls: Did you know that most federal agencies do not hire new law graduates directly, but through their Honors Programs? If you are interested in such postgraduate opportunities, you also need to consider how to gain legal experience with the federal government while in law school. Peruse  the Government Job Search Guide (in the Symplicity Document Library) and the Honors & Internship Handbook (password links are in the Symplicity Announcements). For example, the US Department of Justice has announced that their applications will be open July 25-September 6, 2011. You are also encouraged to make an appointment with Alisa Rosales, Associate Director of Public Service to create your application and networking strategy.

Please check your graduation date in your Symplicity profile! If it is incorrect, please email your advisor so that she can update that information for you. We use this information to customize information to send you based on various deadlines for FERP and other opportunities, and you will not recieve the appropriate information unless that information is correct.  An important one will be coming out next week for students enrolled part-time so please check that out today.

FERP Update! **New EARLIER Deadlines**  The Major changes to the FERP process are detailed in the FERP Announcements in Symplicity, with a new FAQ supplementing that document and the FERP Orientation Video:
  • All of the registration and bidding procedures can now be completed online. This eliminates the need to fax or bring in materials to our office.
  • The priority resume review deadline is TODAY! Friday, July 15, 2011. We cannot guarantee to review resumes uploaded after today before the FERP Registration Priority Deadline of Wednesday, July 27, 2011. Your registration will not be accepted as complete unless you have an approved resume AND have entered all of your schedule conflicts.
  • Due to the fact that we are adding employers all the time, you MUST enter conflicts for the ENTIRE FERP period, and are expected to keep that updated as your schedule changes. You will not be able to bid on employers until you have successfully completed the Registration process.
  • The Registration process is now separate from the Bidding process, and each has its own deadline. You are expected to keep a copy of all of your bids and the materials that you submit for each employer.
  • The Priority Registration date is now Wednesday, July 27, 2011.
  • The first bidding deadline will now be Friday, July 29, 2011 at Noon (local to DePaul).
  • Many of the other procedures and deadlines, such as having your resume approved, attending FERP Orientation (or watching the video and completing the quiz), remain the same, and more information about those and any other requirements are included in the FERP Announcements in Symplicity.
