Next Week in LCS - 9/9/2011

The latest in Next Week in LCS hot off the presses!

Professional Development Tips: Quality over quantity is a useful rule of thumb in many aspects of the job search including:

  • Networking: connecting to a smaller group that you know well and knows you well, and with whom you will actually keep in touch, makes the connections more meaningful and rewarding.  For all parties concerned.
  • Job Applications: tailor your materials for each posting with information specific to that employer, posting, and any connections will help you stand out. Sending out generic cover letters, resumes, and inquiry requests will generally land your materials in the trash.
  • The Small Details: sending handwritten thank you notes, using correct titles (assume to Ms. over Mrs., find out if someone has a doctorate) while correctly spelling the name (huge for people with tricky spellings), following up with people who have referred you -- these are the small things that people will remember about you.  Well-thought out and timed communication will do you well in the stead.

Are you interested in a government career? Come learn about the federal government's premier leadership development program, the Presidential Management Fellows,  from Shaye Loughlin, Executive Director of the Center for Public Interest Law on Monday, September 12 at 5:00 p.m. in 342 Lewis. She will share details about the opportunity and the College of Law's nomination procedures.

Off the Pages: The Chicago Lawyer magazine is holding the first "Off The Pages" conference on getting and keeping business. The Sept. 20 event is at the Union League Club and starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends by 11:30 a.m. The event includes three panels: one on growing your book of business; another on building a relationship with in-house lawyers; and the third on motivating and keeping young talent. This is a perfect opportunity to network and meet other lawyers. More details here.

Looking to broaden your legal and professional skills while networking? Becoming invovled in pro bono programs is a great way to start! The Pro Bono & Commmunity Service Initiative is sponsoring its Fall Service Activities Fair on Thursday, September 15 in 905 Lewis over the lunch hour.  THere are also opportunities posted at Illinois Pro Bono for law students, attorneys, and legal support staff. Finally, The Chicago Bar Foundation publishes the Chicago Pro Bono Opportunities Guide to give you a sense of additional opportunities.

Ten Minute Advising is Back! If you have a question that can be answered quickly, stop by late afternoons during the semester to meet with an advisor.  Drop-in from 3:00-5:30 p.m. on most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with any questions that can be answered quickly.  For exact dates and times each week, please check the Symplicity calendar.
