Join the YLS Environmental Law Committee, in association with the Alliance for the Great Lakes, and participate in an Adopt-a-Beach clean-up event on October 4, 6:00-7:00 p.m., at Oak Street Beach, 1000 N. Lake Shore Drive. Volunteers will work in groups of three to collect, sort, and classify the items found on the beach using Adopt-a-Beach worksheets. Volunteers will also remove litter and

Wills for Heroes
CBA YLS is seeking additional volunteers for the Wills for Heroes event this Saturday, September 29, 2012. If you are able to volunteer for this event please RSVP by clicking on this link and entering your information: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WFH092912
Through the events coordinated by the committee, volunteer lawyers create free wills and other estate planning documents for local emergency first responders and their spouses or partners. Since November 2001, the Wills for Heroes program has prepared more than 7,000 estate-planning documents for first responders.
You do not need to be an attorney to volunteer, nor do you need to have any estate planning experience. If you know of someone else who is interested please pass along this email. If you have any questions, please email Alexis Bettis at bettis [at] gmail.com.

NY Pro Bono Requirment Update
For applicants to the New York State Bar beginning in January 2015, 50 hours of pro bono service will be required. Participation in law school clinics will count toward meeting the requirment. Thanks to PSJD for providing these details and materials:

• “The...requirement will take effect immediately for first- and second-year law students, who will have up to 34 months to fulfill the mandate. Current third-years are exempt.... Starting Jan. 1, 2015, every applicant to the bar will be required to fulfill the requirement.

Did you know that you can volunteer for the the City of Chicago Department of Law? The way to apply is to find the Law Department’s page on the City’s website, www.cityofchicago.org. It’s under Chicago Government (in the amber bar). Then find Department Directory, and scroll down to Law. This page will take you to careers, and then the Department of Law Volunteer Program. This offers you a step-by-step guide on how to volunteer, which you should follow to the letter. When you apply, specify which Law Department divisions interest you.
