PMF Tips: Focusing on the Criteria
As with any job, it is important to focus on what the employer needs from you to make their organization more successful. For programs like the Presidential Management Fellows, it is a bit trickier because you don't have a specific employer you are targeting yet. But it is also easier because they've identified the criteria on which they are basing their evaluations:
• Problem Solving
• Interpersonal Skills
• Oral Communication
• Written Communication

Etiquette Tip of the Week: Neutralized and brought down to size
A friend of mine in Washington D.C. had a great way of dispatching notorious braggarts.
She would smile and say, (and the emphasis is important here) "How nice FOR you." Her inflection was so subtle and her smile so sweet, sometimes they did not realize they were being neutralized and brought down to size.
This is different from saying, "How nice for YOU," which implies a tinge of jealously on your part. That is what the braggart wants, right? No need to be jealous of people boasting of material wealth, because most of them are living beyond their means. It's what Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko, authors of the best-seller, The Millionaire Next Door, called the "Big Hat, No Cattle" theory.
Thank you to the Culture and Manners Institute.for this week's tip.

Opportunities to Combat Sex Trafficking
As President of the Chicago Bar Association this year, I am committed to raising awareness and support among the Chicago legal community about human trafficking. This modern-day slavery is occurring in our own communities, and is most often going undetected. There are many ways our legal community can make a difference in this tragic arena.
I have three human trafficking initiatives for this bar year: (1) build awareness of human trafficking among Chicago attorneys; (2) assist with efforts to increase awareness and reporting of trafficking in Asian and Pacific Islander communities in Cook County; and (3) support legal services for trafficking victims.

Interested in volunteering or having the Club pick up a donation? Contact Kristina Young (otscjb [at] gmail.com) at Off the Street Club.
Etiquette Tip of the Week: How nice for mee to set a title.
The next time you are introduced to someone, instead of saying, "I'm pleased to meet you," or "It's nice to meet you," try saying, "How do you do?" It's a more polished response and it makes the introduction about the other person instead of about you.
Make an effort to repeat the person's name back to him or her: "How do you do, Mr. Haskell?" This is flattering to the other person and it helps you with name recall. (Okay, sometimes it is about you.)
The answer to, "How do you do?" is, "I'm fine, thank you."
